Support Sleeping Beauty on IndieGoGo. A tracking device made 100% in Berlin.

Sleeping Beauty is a compact security device built by Berlin-based Jacob Lipps and team which protects and tracks your valuable possessions, using a cellular network to triangulate its position. Get it now from its crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo which already runs.

Here is a short story about Sleeping Beauty. If she’s left undisturbed she sleeps, but if you move her, she wakes up. And when Sleeping Beauty wakes up she’ll tell you exactly where she is via a push-notification on your smartphone app.

That means that Sleeping Beauty can keep an eye on those things that should stay put – like that classic Ferrari in your garage, or your front door while you’re away. Or she can help you recall those irritating details in life – like where you last parked your car or left your handbag. Whenever Sleeping Beauty moves she’ll report exactly where she is, otherwise, with up to 2 years of battery life, she’ll just snooze on and on and on…

The real beauty of Sleeping Beauty is that it can track almost any object anywhere in the world where there’s cellular network coverage. GSM and GPS provide the best reception: even in closed rooms or in subways Sleeping Beauty can send and receive data.

What you can do with Sleeping Beauty is up to you?

  • My very own yuppy Porsche is giving me separation anxiety. When Sleeping Beauty’s on duty, my mind’s at rest.

  • Alone in the wilderness with everything I own in one backpack. Just in case it should go hiking on its own, Sleeping Beauty’s keeping watch.

  • All my stuff’s in a container being shipped to Europe. Or was that Mongolia? No – Honduras.  Sleeping Beauty can keep track of exactly where it’s gone.

  • Any other use case, you name it.

First Techstars Demo Day in Berlin

The first Techstars demo day in Berlin was something! I know it is Sunday, I will be quick I promise. 🙂

Techstars Demo Day 2015

Hosted in Hebbel-Theater in Berlin’s Kreuzberg district Jens Lapinski and his team presented their first batch of startups. The gorgeous Art Nouveau styled building was built in 1907/1908 and was the early and unique work of the famous architect Oskar Kaufmann. It was the breakthrough that shot him to fame. Let’s wish the same to the first Techstars batch!

The startups pitched in 2 batches of 5 and the presentations all looked super well done – for me this means crisp, elaborated and well timed. Founders walked to the stage accompanied by the thundering tunes of charging music pieces and presented with a sleek looking deck of slides outlining market opportunities, user growth, expansion plans. The best part though is that at least 2 of the companies have secured funding during the programme – 1x Seed and 1x Series A. You could feel that some founders are still fundraising and pretty nervous. Yet, I am confident that more news is coming soon.  I have seen the products of these companies 3 months ago and am amazed by the progress they have achieved.

Jens has closed the demo session with some kind words to all involved but I would like to share one of his slides summarising the Techstars values.

Powerful message – nothing to add!

That was not all though. The event moved on in the Factory Berlin and continued with networking first and last but not least – an afterparty .

It was a well spent day 🙂

Good luck to all teams, and keep sending me updates. Looking forward to hear from you!

Help a good man get back on his feet

My topics are usually about technology, startups and entrepreneurs. This time it is about a friend, classmate and a great person. This time it is about Matt.

This is how I remember Matt. I took this photo back in 2010. But Matt is no longer like this. His life turned upside down and it could happen to you too. Read below why he needs your help now. You can also read the story directly at the fundraising campaign page.

Matt played for Cambridge University in 2010 and 2011 while studying for his MBA and was 1st XV captain in 2011. He was also a member of the Canadian national rugby team in both the 15- and 7-a-side squads from 2002 to 2006 and was captain and MVP of the latter in 2005.

Matt suffered a neck injury in 2002 while playing for Canada. The extent of the injury was misdiagnosed and he was advised to play through the discomfort, which he did for the balance of his career, causing serious damage to his spine in the process. Additionally, Matt has recently been diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), a connective tissue disorder that leaves him prone to ligament and tendon tears and severe degeneration and arthritis. For further reading on this condition, visit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ehlers–Danlos_syndrome.

Matt has been unable to work since completing his MBA in 2011. In order to survive, he has exhausted his savings and RRSP funds, accumulated significant debt, and now tries to live off his $750/month disability allowance.

Matt has significant earning potential as evidenced by his strong work ethic, business and personal network, and his status as an elite athlete. He is, however, caught in a cycle where he’s in too much pain and too fatigued to work or make much progress in his recovery since many of the treatments that help him are not covered by the Canadian health care system and he has no additional benefits coverage.

Matt does well with low impact exercise in water and various modalities such as physiotherapy, massage therapy, chiropractic, and other similar treatments. We are arranging for Matt to see a chronic pain specialist and a geneticist to see if they can offer some fresh opinions and are planning to enroll him in a chronic pain management course this fall.

We are raising funds to help Matt to access treatment, pay for a pool membership, and return to a state of health where he can work and support himself. Matt’s weekly medical treatments cost $450 (or $90 each) and a monthly pool membership costs $40. Your contributions will help him achieve his goals.

Many thanks for joining our efforts to help Matt get his life back.

We need to help him. We have set up a fundraising campaign. Please donate as much as is dear to you. Every contribution counts.

Thank you!
